some sketches, some photos, and some bears from ao’s and my catskillian vacation. (frankie too!)

photos from earlier this summer of lunchtime cruise south with the pencil factory crew on the recently opened east river ferry to dumbo.

never before seen, illustrators running.

seen before, illustrators eating pizza.

back in february, i had the opportunity to get my hands painty on a project for better homes and gardens. friend, studio neighbor, and illustrator james gulliver hancock did the initial stoop drawing, but he couldn’t be bothered to change the date of his wedding to create the large finished piece. so for a day, i got to be large scale painter eben! nice to get out of the studio, as well as getting to meet some lovely people.

the shoot took place and canoe studios in manhattan, and while i have nothing but love for the pencil factory, canoe has some views.

normally i don’t much like sketchbooks that last too long as it tends to mean they became too precious, and this lil’ guy lasted a year and a half (that’s a long time in eben sketchbook years). there’s some good stuff in the front and back, and really, part of its longevity is due to just being plain old forgotten in the middle of last year. so little green sketchbook, join your comrades, i’ll flip back through you someday.

while complicated and perilous to walk through, i love the the city under a layer of ice on a rainy/sleety/icy day.

a couple of weeks ago, i was involved in a video shoot directed by john pavlus for NPR’s new android app. the idea behind the video is a stop-motion-whiteboard-style thingie, illustrating the community development of the app. it was a fun day, the shoot took place at ten ton studio in the brooklyn navy yard, and i got to hangout with a bunch of good looking hands. in case you’re curious, i’m the hand at the top right (the lefty, but you knew that) mostly drawing in the orange highlight field during the mass of hands segment (:41-:58).

here are a couple of behind the scenes shots i secretly took with my ‘android’ phone before the NPR gestapo showed up to keep me from photographing the proceedings.

new postcards have arrived, and studiomate porkchop offered to model them for the sketchblog. labeling, stamping, and spamming the world will occur this week, so if your fridge has been asking for a new postcard, your cork board has a 4″x6″ open space, or you’re an art director with a ridiculously huge illustration budget (i’m talking AIG bonus, big!), send me an email with your address and i’ll send you a postcard.
porkchop has his postcard . . . will you?
special thanks to josh cochran for porkchop’s hair and makeup.

ao and i have our apartment featured on design*sponge (thanks grace and anne). their sneak peek section presents the households of artists, designers, and even illustrators! we had a great time getting our place together, buffing, polishing, photographing, and only one knife fight (ao won, but i’m a quick healer). special thanks to stephanie for her styling assistance.

local lunch jaunt the garden, has gone gnome crazy for the holidays. gnomes swinging, gnomes wheelbarrowing, and uh…gnomes waiting in line for the hotbar.
